I usually leave the blogging to Devanie, but she has had her hands full the past few days so I’m going to quickly take a turn. It’s been a busy year for our family but I think we’re finally settled into our new home in Utah. It’s only on rare occassions that you will hear Devanie or one of the kids reminisce of the house in Connecticut. We miss everyone in Connecticut, but we’ve made some really good friends here in Utah this last year.
Devanie has had an overwhelming year! Her biggest achievement this year was Aurora, of course, but notwithstanding that monumental feat, she managed to tend to the other three kids, running errands and bending over backwards to make sure everyone was happy and healthy. She’s had her share of health problems this year but has still managed to run a Cookie Lee Jewelry business and grow a Shaklee business. Somehow she finds time to go to the gym and play basketball at the Church. I’m so grateful I found someone as selfless as Devanie!
Hailey continues to impress us with how smart she is! This year she was invited to attend a special school for talented kids. She breezes through her homework and loves making arts and crafts with skill far beyond her years. We have probably stunted her intellectual growth, however, by feeding her competitive nature with Nintendo DS games. She loves to spend time with her DS and has a hard time putting it down.
Of all of our kids, Sierra is the most giving and is frequently looking for ways to help out. She is always full of energy and very passionate. It’s great to be on the receiving side when she’s in a good mood, but you better watch out when she’s upset! Sierra started the year struggling with reading but is now capable of reading almost any word as long as she remains cool. She expects a lot of herself and get’s frustrated easily. She has a lot of friends at school.
Zachary wears his emotions on his sleeve. It is always easy to tell exactly how he feels by just looking at him. Normally, he wears a big smile and his eyes sparkle. Sometimes he feels lathargic and walks slowly around the house with his blanket and stares at the TV. Rarely he gets in a bad mood but is often easy to comfort with a quick nap or a few tickles. He loves Thomas the Train, both on TV and downstairs on his train set. He’s a real boy’s boy!
Aurora is going to be a lot like Hailey, super smart. She learns something new almost every day; Mostly thanks to Devanie’s efforts. She’s almost standing now and has been mobile (crawling) for a long time. She waves and will mimic almost any action she sees. Seeing Aurora smile at you can really warm your heart!
Here are a couple of pictures worth posting. Long-term readers will remember that we had some problems with Hailey drawing on EVERYTHING in the house (couches, walls, carpet, etc.). Recently we discovered where that annoying habbit stems from! Zach took a permanent marker and colored all over his chair and Devanie’s computer desk. As I was photographing this treasured moment (uh, incriminating evidence), I noticed a small mark on the monitor also! I started to get upset and Devanie confessed that the mark on the monitor was her doing. So mystery solved, drawing on things is a Lay-family gene.
I know it’s a little late to post these pictures but Devanie never got around to them. These pictures are from the Christmas Tree fair that we attended with Uncle Mike, Aunt Denise, and family. The girls got to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they wanted. It worked! They got exactly what they asked for. Thanks, Denise, for the pictures!
The whole family is optimistic about the New Year! We’re thinking about goals to set and excited to see what the next year will bring. From our family to yours, we wish you a Happy New Year and that it will be filled with hope, warmth, and family.
